When I’m putting together the list of upcoming episodes for my podcast, I’m always trying to choose something that will have a broad appeal and be widely useful. Like a proud mom, I want all my offspring to be popular!
That’s why it’s so interesting to see which episodes strike a chord with listeners. (Luckily, podcast episodes don’t have feelings so I don’t have to worry about making all the other episodes feel better, LOL.)
As I was looking through my numbers for the first three months of the podcast, I noticed that these were the top 5 episodes from 2019, in terms of downloads. Below I give a little insight into why I think they got as many listens as they did.
Number 5: How to Let Go of Anger
We’ve all got anger. Especially in this tense time in our country’s history, it feels like peak anger season. We don’t know what to do with it, but we sure would like to. This episode is all about how to process your anger and get to the other side.
Number 4: What You Appreciate Appreciates
There’s a lot of negativity out there and a tendency to focus on what’s wrong—whether that’s by writing a bad review, complaining to a friend, or letting it rip in the comments of a controversial article. I think the fact that this episode was popular shows that a lot of us are craving more of seeing the good. And not in a woo-woo, The Secret kind of way, but in actually appreciating what’s right in front of us. It’s a different take on gratitude.
Number 3: Mono-Task at Least One Thing a Day
I think this episode speaks to everyone’s hunger to not feel like our attention is scattered every which way. Just doing one thing at a time? Ahhhh…. Hook it to my veins.
Number 2: Listen Better
This was the first official episode of the podcast, and while I definitely think that the topic is a perennial favorite, I think this episode also benefits from people who discover the podcast later but want to go back to the beginning to get a proper introduction. Which I completely appreciate (and didn’t anticipate!).
Number 1: Forgive YOUR Mistakes
This episode was listed in a FastCompany.com article called “7 Podcasts That Will Help You Achieve Your Goals in the New Year,” so it got a huge boost from that. While I would say that maybe that means it’s not fair to compare this episode to the others on the list, there was something about it that caught that writer’s eye, so… good for you, little episode!
And just as a bonus, Stick Your Butt Out was number six, with 383 downloads. Which goes to show that even though being a better person is serious business, we’re hungry for ways we can have a little fun with it. =)
And the really fun news is that since that FastCompany.com article came out, my downloads have seen a really nice surge that I appreciate so much! The next time I do a round-up of most popular episodes, those numbers will look a lot different. Go little children, go be successful! Heeeee.
Did you have a hands-down favorite episode in 2019? I’d love to hear what it is! Tweet it to me @KateHan. Knowing what you love helps me plan more like it.
