The difference makes all the difference

waiting in lineI posted this on my Facebook page recently:

“If you want different results, you’ve got to take different actions.”

So simple. So succinct. If you’ve ever thought you might like to give coaching with me a try but are hesitant for whatever reason, this quote pretty much sums up the experience. It gives you 90% of the information you need to make change! Take it and run with it. =)

Let’s say, for example, you want to eat a healthier diet. You’ve got to buy different stuff at the grocery store and reach for different things when you open the fridge. You’ve got to hear your same ole hunger cues and decide to do something other than your typical response.

That’s a pretty cut and dried example. But there are lots of subtler instances where difference is just the ticket – on the phone call with your friend who always talks a blue streak and you barely get a word in, for example. In a conversation with your Mom when it veers into your personal business and you typically shut down. In a fight with your husband when you say the same thing you’ve said a million times before. The difference that makes all the difference happens in teeny tiny little moments, and they change everything.

Here’s how: When you veer off your same-old course, you give yourself a new perspective. You get instant feedback, which leads to greater insight. That insight allows you to choose your next different step more skillfully.

If it’s so easy, why do we as humans resist making different decisions?

It’s easy to get paralyzed out of taking action because you don’t know which action is going to get you the results you want. But here’s the thing. You never know which action is going to get you the results you want. It’s not the particulars of the action. It’s the energy behind the action itself that builds momentum and ultimately creates change. When you start doing things differently, you are saying “I want something better than this,” to the universe. That’s when opportunities arise, seemingly out of nowhere. That’s when you start building a result that is even better than you could have dreamed up for yourself.

If you’re feeling stuck in a particular cycle or situation, what can you do differently?

(Hint: It’s best if you opt for trying something just because it feels right or exciting, and not because you read a blog post about how somebody else did something similar to what you wanted to do and all you have to do is follow these 10 steps.)

Now go try it. =)
